Yeah you do want a decent depth of substrate. Ugh why are cages so expensive. Last night fudge was being a wee tinker. I decided to put his level back in his Alaska and he started climbing the bars, chewing them and throwing himself off the bars. Before I put the level in he never was interested or maybe he does and it never wakes me. Though I don't know how for it was a wild racket! I like wire cages but hams just love climbing and chewing the bars which I don't like and don't think is good for them. Yes he's in my room so I was awake half the night but even if he wasn't I still wouldn't like to know that's what he was at. I had to remove it as some of the falls didn't sound that good :/ which is annoying as I want to be able to use the level that comes with the cage so I'm making use of it.
