Most types of play sand should be suitable as an option if chinchilla sand isn't and will quite often have undergone additional preparation methods to make it suitable for use with children. Given the fact that it has to meet certain standards before being certified as being safe for children it would be unlikely to contain any harmful chemicals.

If you can't get hold of play sand or chinchilla sand then I would delay giving a sand bath to your hamster. It won't do him any harm to go without one for a week or two.
