Hamsters often ignore a lot of toys
I had all kinds of hanging things - all ignored. They are burrowers more than climbers and I reckon they mostly only climb if they are trying to find a way out. eg climbing the bars. I did have a sandblasted vine branch in my last cage for climbing up and for access to Charlie's sputnik. He didn't like climbing it but he did like sitting on it and under it sometimes. They do like a shelf with a ramp up though to sit on and under, and they like lots of hidey places. The only hanging toy Charlie liked was one that had food attached to it
It was this kebab kabob thingy. It does have a bell and I liked hearing the bell tinkling when he tried to pull food off. He also came out when he heard the bell, knowing I was putting food on it (you can hide treats between the wood blocks which slide up and down) - but - I was concerned about the ring the bell hangs from (small enough to get a hammy foot caught in) so I swapped the ring for a standard sized keyring which is larger so no chance of getting caught. If it hangs over a shelf and the ring is low down though, it's not risky really.

Cotton isn't safe to chew for hanging toys, but sisal string is and these loofah hanging things are ok too.

I had the second one - Charlie sniffed it then ignored it! Hidey places and edible things are popular with them though. You have to be a bit careful with climbing toys as they can fall and hurt themselves if they land on something hard, but as long as they don't hang too high it should be ok. I really like the hammock on Erin's hamsters 10 toilet roll tube toys!

When setting up the cage, I find the main thing to think about is - access. If they have a hammock or hanging sputnik - can they get to it? (I tied a tube to the roof leading from a shelf to the sputnik for access). And can they jump out of it/off it and land on anything and hurt themselves (hard items, eg ceramic are best underneath a shelf). You can make a "run" at another level by connecting a shelf/hammock/sputnik/house roof with a tube or ramp or bendy bridge. Houses with flat roofs can make another level too.
