I have a baby Winter White and they are gorgeous. Super cute (very important) and very funny little characters. They are also quite active and fun to watch. I would suggest looking into a reputable breeder. Also, pedigree WW aren't prone to diabetes which is great for beginners to the dwarf species'.
As I have never owned any other species, I can't help you on the last part. Good luck and I hope you find the right hamster for you.
