Default Re: Is his teeth too long?!

Hi - it's difficult to tell from those photos, but he does look adorable! Is he eating ok? If he's eating a regular hamster mix ok (ie hard food) he probably isn't having any problems with his teeth. Of course we often don't see them eating - they do it from their hoard in their houses usually, but as long as he isn't losing weight he's probably eating ok.

They do need things to chew on to keep their teeth trim. Those chew sticks with wood in the centre are good, but most of them have honey or sugar in (hamsters can get tooth decay as well!) I like the Rosewoods naturals ones which are healthy and don't have sugar in. I used to get the dandelion one and the mini rodent sticks. Our hamster wouldn't chew anything unless it had food attached He ignored the dandelion stick for a couple of days but then curiosity got the better of him and after that he would spent a week or two chewing it and demolishing it. The mini rodent sticks he took to straight away (they have cheese in). If you feed a mix like Harry Hamster as well, the pieces are hard and a good size for a Syrian hamster to bite at. Giving a monkey nut once a week as well means they crack the shell open with their teeth.

If you're a bit concerned about his teeth, waiting till you see him yawning and have a peek then. The bottom teeth at the front should be quite long, and the two front top teeth very short.

The picture at the top of this thread shows what a normal set of teeth should look like

No top teeth?

The other chews that hamsters go crazy for are the Antos mini toothbrushes and crocodiles. They're actually dog chews but are vegetable based and safe for hamsters - the mini size is just right and I've yet to hear of a hamster that doesn't chew those or go crazy for them.

I get the mini singles at 69p. Our hamster loves all except the white algae ones - he won't touch those. If you order four you'll probably get one of each.

These are the Rosewood dandelion chew sticks (if you don't want an add on item, click on "other sellers" - I prefer getting these here to viovet as they seem newer (ie I've had old stock from Viovet). I think Posh pets was an ok seller I used. They're not cheap with postage, but there are two in a pack and would last quite a while

These are the mini rodent sticks - Cambridge Pet Store are an ok seller as well.
