Not sure if it can happen with hamsters but it could be harder to chew the skin as well.Unless you can be sure that there are no pesticides on the skin though it might be safest to remove the skin just to be safe.

I personally wouldn't risk skin as even I,a human,have nearly choked on apple skin.It might be the paranoid motherly side of me coming out,but one can never be too careful with things like that!
