As Amityville says, DIY cages can be made to whatever size you want, but as you were asking about tanks I'm guessing you like the idea of a tank. They are very popular for hammy habitats in the US. I wouldn't say they are too narrow - they come in different sizes. But it's true, the more floor area you can give them the better. The detolf makes up for being a bit narrow by having all that length which can be made into different level areas.
