#1 advice is locate a breeder who is also a very willing Mentor, and Listen to and do what they suggest. Start with a pair with a good long pedigree with them, and focus on one base color and work with that color until you have perfected it. Go to as many shows as is possible and study the Hamsters in the color you prefer to start with, and don't start with a color which is rare or hard to find as you will be heading for failure and often that discourages and causes you to quit before even starting.
