I'm guessing you're in the US? Apparently hamsters in the US, especially from pet shops rather than breeders, tend to be on the smaller side compared to those here in Europe.

It's not so much the weight you should be looking at, but more the condition. If his eyes are bright, eats clean, fur soft, teeth and nails good, and you can't feel his ribs (i.e. he's a squishy fluff potato), and his attitude hasn't changed, then he's fine. He's just a small hamster. =)

We usually use weight to check for illness; if a hamster gains or loses a lot of weight in a short amount of time, then they might have an underlying condition causing it. If a hamster's weight remains stable (usually within 3-5g for Syrians, 1-3g for dwarfs, or at least that's how I go), then you shouldn't have anything to worry about as long as there are no other symptoms.
