I've used plastikote on a lot of stuff in various hamster cages. One of my female Syrians has taken to chewing her wheel a lot (It is plastikoted) and apart from being slightly crazy and hyper (which she has been all her life anyway :P ) I haven't seen ill effects with her and have never seen plastikote cause any problems with other hams I've owned and all except for one have lived to be around two years old give or take a few months
