This is the chinchilla sand most of us use in the UK, also available on Amazon in the US.

I think people in the US tend to use boxo, aspen & carefresh mostly but can't be sure.
Carefresh can smell a bit odd sometimes & it's not a favourite of mine but if you have little choice it's not bad.
Give your ham lots of shredded plain white toilet paper for nesting too.
As I said before it may not be your substrate that's the problem so much as over cleaning, how often have you been doing it?
Try the litter tray anyway & see if that changes things.

ETA There are a couple of different substrates worth looking at here, Kaytree & Oxbow I've never used them being in the UK but both look good & would be safe to use.
