I think the sand is safer as the litter isn't good for them if they ingest it. I've found that the chinchilla sand (NOT dust) is the best for odour control and clumping, children's play sand is ok but not as effective and led to more evident smells. I'm currently using the selective science chinchilla sand. And yes, mine both kick it everywhere aswell lol!
