Bertie is correct. Hybrid refers to the two "Russian" dwarf species, Campbells and Winter Whites. Although two different species they are similar enough to breed together and have created what we call a hybrid but is more often referred to by pet shops as Russian hamsters. This interbreeding is what leads to an increased risk of diabetes. Syrian hamsters are just one species and cannot be bred with another.
