You could return it and make one from cardboard boxes.
But as has already been said, it`s better to be with your hamster at all times when they are placed on the floor, even in what is considered to be a secure play pen. Ideally you want a solid-sides walled play pen. Making one from the sides of cardboard boxes and taping them together doesn`t cost anything. x
