I've attached a couple of pictures for you. The slits are relatively short, so the ham doesn't have to run on them. You can see a couple of indents on the ball, which is where the two halves attach together. This means there are three slightly raised areas inside the ball, but as far as I can tell the hamsters don't notice them while running
