Shana has said it all there mostly. Commercial cages do tend to be smaller than the recommended size for a hamster to live in. There are bigger ones, but in the US there are maybe only a couple of good sized hamster cages available (the Marchioro Kevin is one) and a lot of US owners buy a large glass tank instead of a cage.
