The idea of 2.5 hours on a bus sounds not so good. Not only in a traveling case, but its a massive jumble of noises and smells and not much to do in the event he freaks out a bit.

I'd say a weekend is fine to leave him on his own, so long as you can have someone check daily that he is out and about, the water and food is full and he hasn't gotten stuck anywhere in the cage, or had an accident. So long as someone checks in on him, he'll be fine.
