Any wooden shelving I would paint with a waterproof paint that is child safe. Plastikote enamel takes 30 mins to dry, and this protects against hamsters peeing on them. I think Plastikote has changed name to Valspar or something but it is the same paint. PVA glue would work just as well as a selant
