The Bernie deluxe is perfect for a single dwarf. We have the flying house up the way and they love climbing up to sit in there. You can fit a silent spinner in the cage if you want and quite a few toys with imagination (see review). I think the lack of space would plat a part in the splitting but really it just depends on the hammies. Very few single sex pairs stay together. It is just not a natural situation for these animals. We kept two in a huge gabber with two of everything and still had to split the brothers at 4-5 months when they were mature. I am sure he will love the FOP cage. Two spelios together would do a dwarf but one is really too small. I am sure you feel better with them alone and you have done your best for them Lots of love and out playtime soon makes up for lack of space and you can upgarde when you can manage it.
