I generally follow the guidelines of:

1.) 360 sq inches as the absolute minimum.
2.) As long as it is above 360 sq inches, then go for what you can afford and best suits you, the bigger the better though.

There is no set minimum as the organisation that would impose the minimum would be slaughtered by the billion pound companies such as pets at home, just for pets etc. We can only want the best for our pets and the pet world is extremely diverse where everybody has their own opinion, which they are rightfully entitled to. However the information I believe that we want to feed into people who are new to hamsters is the generally recommended cage sizes! x
