It's really annoying. I've just let my hammy out free around the room. He runs around for a bit, looking all cute - then heads STRAIGHT to the corner where the carpet meets the sideboard and starts trying to dig and eat it. It's so mental. I put a placemat down in the corner to try and stop him doing it- he pulls it up and away with his teeth and just carries on! What is so appealing to him about the carpet anyway?
