Default Re: My hamster is Screaming?

Elbatgirl- I adopted an baby Syrian at 28 days old- The way your baby ham is acting reminds me of Teddy, my ham when I first got her.. She never screamed, but, she would jump, and I mean "jump" up in the air, in her cage, if I put my hand in her cage.. She didn't take treats from my hand, for 2 weeks, that I had her, and I spent at least 2 hours or more, each night/early morning near her cage, talking to her, and I'd put my hand in her cage, not touching her, but in her cage, for about a week, to let her know, my hand was not going to harm her. I also did what I read on a HC thread, put my scent on some tissue, and put it in her cage..
She would also, do what yours is doing, climb the cage bars, when she knew I was around her cage, and run away from my hand for a while. I let her be for the first 4 or so days that I got her, then offered a raisin, which I noticed she really liked raisin's..- It took another week or so, for her to "sniff" the raisin, but still would be very "skittish" and run away.. even when I had to reach in her cage to feed her, she would be so scared, she'd flip on her side with her arms straight out, and show her teeth, but never bit me.. Your baby ham is very scared and out of her element, her comfort zone, and by herself for the first time, without her mommy and siblings.. What I learned with Teddy, is talk first to her, and put the front side of my hand, against her cage, to let her "smell" my hand first, then slowly reach in her cage, no sudden movements or she would "fly out of her hammy fur" lol.. She just needs time to adjust to her new home, and separation from her mommy.. I've had Teddy going on 8 weeks now, and she's much more "trusting" of me, will take treats from my hand, come out of her hut, when she hears my voice, and walk onto my hand, when she wants to come out of her cage... although, there are a days, she doesn't want to be "bothered".. she would prefer to "look" out of her cage, and observe or hang out in her cage, and I give her the space she needs. Don't worry, your baby ham will come around..it may take a few months or so- I didn't think Teddy would ever tame, or be an ham that can be handled, after a month of my time that I'd spend with her.. many times, I'd just sit in a chair, and read, along side her cage, and speak soothingly to her.. She's just very scared, and probably traumatized.. hang in there, she'll come around. . x
