Default Re: Colby's Animal Fact of the Day

Actually ChocolateCream (dons her animal nerd glasses and pocket protector), the notion that a dragonfly lives as an adult for only 24 hours is a mere misconception. The dragonfly lives for well over a year, depending on the species. Most of that time is spent in the nymph stage, which can last from a year to well over a few years. Once the Nymph as shed its skin and emerges as an adult dragonfly, it usually lives for a couple more months, then dies. There is no known species that has an adult life that is 24 hours long.

Also, and not to nit pick, but only the largest of the known specimens of the green anaconda reach 500lbs or more. There weight is usually found to be in the range of 66lbs to 154lbs, though an accurate assesment of average weight among specimens is difficult due to their home range being mostly thick and inaccessible jungle terrain.

And, just to add, only the smallest species of hummingbirds, like the bee hummingbird of Cuba, weigh less than a penny.
