Re: Vet Care - how much should I budget?
Area: Cardiff, UK
Number of hamsters: 2 (plus other pets too)
Vet fund: I don't current have one but pay vets bills as necessary.
Consultation: Prices have just gone up at both the vets I use and are now £30 and £32 but does cover the cost of some medication if needed.
Teeth trimming: variable. £6.64 with clippers but vet made gerbils mouth bleed so didn't go back to them again. £22 for burring (but the vet kindly did 2 gerbils teeth for the price of one).
Out of hours vet treatment: £79.95 plus cost of medication.
Surgery: I've only had surgery on gerbils but expect the price would be the same for a hamster. Ear tumour removal £145 (June 2012); scent gland removal £100 (December 2012); Skin tumour removal £138 (July 2013). Post op checks are free.
PTS: £36 (2012)
Total vet bill for 2012: £730.47 (treatment of 5 gerbils)
Vet bill so far for 2013: £232.75 (treatment for 2 gerbils)
