I think Slatted is saying that any reputable pet store or breeder should not have sold you two hamsters without ensuring that you are well aware of the care they need.
Certainly nobody should be selling two syrians or two hamsters of different breeds or a male and female of the same breed, without making it VERY clear that they need to be kept in separate cages.
