When I bred gerbils I had two boys (brothers) living together in one enclosure and then two sets of unrelated females living in two seperate tanks, and they had their babies quite happily with their cage mate still in with them, in fact the other girl would help out. I think I was quite lucky, but then they were obtained from a pretty serious breeder, and a great little family-run petshop in Berkshire, England which is sadly no longer there.
I love chickens - I remember begging for some as a youngster and getting 4 for my 8th birthday. My mum hoped for eggs but they were killed by a fox unfortunately a few days later. We got more later on (after the fox had been "removed" from the neighbourhood)
