When using sand pit sand I've always baked it, to attempt to kill off any paracites, but they may mean children using sand pits outside,
for example, at my junior school we had a long jump pit, and cats used to wee and poo in it.
I think chinchilla sand is pumice, so I assume they can make it in a factory from larger pieces? Rather than getting it from a beach etc..
