They don't sleep all day Toffee. As small animals they do get up to wee and drink as well as eat because they need to do this to maintain body temp. If you watch him he will be up and down and they do take naps during the night too.
They tend to get up around sunrise and twilight and become quite active then so I wouldn't worry. Don't give too much wet food as if they store it it goes bad. With a young hammy be generous with the food. When you clean out they should have a small store. If they have none increase food and if a huge amount cut it down. I think he is training you to feed him when his does his tricks!
