Question Syrian seems frantic

Hi well I just thought this odd, and maybe a little worrying. This morning we got up as normal, and at around 9 my hamster woke up and tussled about his bed as normal. Then he really woke up, began running around the cage, and holding onto the bars looking at us as if to ask for something. I figured it was a good time to give him a snack, so got a piece of carrot for him. He ate it very frantically and basically, I kept giving him more and more food, and he kept climbing around the cages(3 attached with tubing) like a nut, I mean he has alot of space, one cage has two levels and another has three. And he made easy use of all of it, climbing VERY high on the three tier cage, climbing up the bars, rather than using the ladders, I was a bit worried he might fall. He was basically just hoarding like crazy, he did this when I first got him, during November, but hasn't done it in ages. I also thought maybe he just wanted attention but he was extremely jumpy, kept nipping, and when I had the cage open he was doing his best to get out, which is again, very unusual. It was just too hard to do anything with him other than giving him food.

Maybe he was just hungry? I used to give him a heaped spoon of hamster food plus snacks(fresh veggies, peanut butter etc), but I kept finding huge hoards of soggy food at the end of the week when cleaning the cage so cut it back to maybe half that hamster food plus snacks. He's quite a small syrian, he was smaller than his siblings when I got him, slim, but healthy looking.

If not hungry maybe just bored or lonely?

To clarify what's weird is, it is extremely unusual for him to be awake at this hour in any situation. I checked his butt and it seems healthy and clean, just because I know about wet tail it's always the first thing I check if he's acting weird.
