Default Squeezing

Older males get this problem a lot Emma - and this time of year too seems to make the gland really overactive. You probably did the best thing squeezing the puss out in this instance, especially as it sounds like it flowed quite freely - this is a good sign. Keep it clean with a little lukewarm saline solution and a cotton bud. You may be right and he is having some issues with grooming due to his teeth troubles. Be careful what paper based litter you use - these really are not intended for use in hamster enclosures - can you get Megazorb? If you do go with a paper litter please make sure to do the pinch test. The vast majority of paper based litters are designed to be ultra absorbent which as you can imagine is not very good if ingested.
