I also got a vinyl-coated garden mesh from Home Depot (~$12 for a large roll) and used small zip ties to attach it to my bin:

I made holes in the plastic with a hot metal needle-like tool and pulled the zip ties through them. The mesh was easy to cut with wire cutters.
