I wont argue here whether humane or otherwise traps are best as I havn't had direct experience in my own home with these. I did work in a kennels and cattery where rats were a big problem though.
Please be very careful with using poison! It is very difficult to make sure any other pets you may have don't get hold of it. It is always meant to be disposed of is specific ways detailed on the packaging to avoid harm to wildlife, but whether your intended target takes it or any other animal - the suffering is great and the death isn't pleasant or quick for you or the animal concerned.
