Can he get into the house from both sides or front only?

I had a house in the middle of a foster hamster's cage once and cut out another entrance so he had a back door. It worked well. Any doors they don't want they simply block off with substrate.

It has a door in the front and a door on top. Normally I have those houses with the back up against the back of the cage. It's easy enough for him to come out of the front or top door and over to the wheel though - but then hamsters are contrary! Perhaps I should have had the door facing the other way! ie towards the wheel. Then he could just fall out of bed and into his wheel. I just tried to keep everything the same as before. His shoe box house only had the one door (also on the same side).

I don't want to fiddle around more for a bit until he's used to the changes for longer but the access at the back isn't quite right - getting in and out of the tube with the top hole so close by.

Yes, i usually have the houses backing against the cage but mentioned the above as an option. By adding an entrance at the opposite side the hamster was able to go through the house rather than over it.

I used to make life easy for the hamsters with access ladders etc but then watched them take the most awkward path to get from A to B.

I don't think the hole in the roof would bother Raffy. I think he's the same type of hamster as Clive and Rodney here. Very agile and resourceful.

I know what you mean about Raffy possibly needing a bigger cage going forward. That's the way i feel about Clive. Like you, i prefer barred cages but can't think of a suitable cage to look out for.

Do you have anything in mind?

The only option i can think of is a meshed guinea pig cage.

I've always liked your set ups and look at them for inspiration.
A friend offered me a Plaza for Clive but i have reservations because it has no top access at all. How do you manage to set it up? It's things like shelves must be really awkward reaching in from the front and around the back.

It would be quite a feat to cut another door in that labyrinth house! Also then it wouldn't be dark inside and he'd lose one of the compartments. Although I guess it would work if it was at the end underneath the top hole as that compartment isn't dark anyway and just an access point. But then he could just use the hole on top which is at the back end anyway. I think he'll just have to make do! He's a real digger anyway so would probably still dig under the house even if there was a door!

Although it's a good point - he also used to dig under the shoebox house. Possibly for the same reason - because there was only a door at one side. I'll think about that.

I have never had a hamster I thought needed bigger than 100cm cage before. Newt was just as active but sometimes a bit wary of the space in his cage (he needed lots of overhead cover). That was the Barney, which is a bit bigger - deeper - it makes a difference - the extra 2" of floor space. It doesn't sound much, 2" - but that 2" extra depth was the whole 100cm width of the cage. Made a very big difference to the amount of floor area.

That cage would have been ideal for Raffy! Although still might not have been big enough - who knows.

The annoying thing is - I toyed between getting another Plaza, or getting the Ritz cage instead. The Ritz cage had the bigger floor area, like the Barney - but didn't have the nice big front door. As it happens Raffy would be better with smaller doors - he literally tries to get out as soon as you open the door! It's a bit of a hazard! Small doors are no good for shy hamsters, but more protection for hamsters who like to hurl themselves out of the cage!

I remember with Newt the first time I put him back in the Barney after out of cage time. I lowered him in through the top door and he shot straight out of the small front door again and landed on the carpet! (I hadn't thought to shut the front door and it happened so fast!).

I hadn't thought about what kind of bigger cage - the thought just popped into my head and came out on here . I wouldn't fance the idea of meshing a cage somehow. There aren't any 120cm hamster cages since German Amazon stopped shipping the Borneo. Which was very tall as well so awkward to set up.

Something else to think about. I also prefer barred cages - maybe he'll be fine with just plenty of out of cage space. Or I could get the Ritz. Not much of an upgrade but.... I am really regretting selling the Barney! But who knew we would have pandemic and they would disappear from sale.

The Ritz is the next best thing. But it doesn't have the big door on top like the Barney. So for taking big things in and out of the cage it would mean taking the bars off each time. Not keen on that idea. It's also lower than the Plaza - only 39cm tall. So the 31cm wheel wouldn't fit in properly anyway. That bit extra height in the plaza has given me more scope for enrichment. Ok so 4cm deeper isn't quite 2"

I have seen the Ritz but dismissed it as unsuitable because it is too low for a Syrian.

Now i half wished that i would have driven down to the coast to get the Barney.....

Had a known Raffy was so gregarious I would have got the Ritz instead of another plaza. I like that height for Syrians - similar height to the Hamster Heaven. For safety and less difficulty setting up to avoid falls. It was the doors that put me off. Mind you the other downside is not much bedding under a wheel with a cage that height (but the upside down wood Karlie/Trixie would have fitted! And I could have saved on wheel cost as well!

Still don't like the small top doors though. I can see why you mentioned a meshed guinea pig cage - it really is about the only option for a 120cm plus cage. Now we can't get things from Germany any more. And I really wouldn't want a tank style - unless it had a front door and wasn't made of wood - which limits things to diy and I'm not up for that. Or a detolf - but I don't think that would be right for Raffy.

No, i don't think a detolf would suit Raffy.

I just saw that very cute photo of Raffy in the wheel in the HOM comp!

I was going to enter a photo of Clive but it is almost identical to Raffy's. It's the same green Trixie wheel in the playground with Clive in it.

Those two are so alike!

Not sure what to do now. Shall i chose a different photo?

Oh I'm sorry! I should enter whichever photo you like - it doesn't matter if they look like twins I should go with the one you wanted to do in the first place.

Those two behave in very similar ways. Clive still prances about when i try to pick him up! Nothing is straight forward with him. Maybe quite apt to picture them in the same wheels, lol. Clive's in his cage not in the playground. I get muddled up with so many hamsters.
