Default New Hamster Hiding From Me?

Hello! My partner and I adopted our boy, Lasagne, 9 days ago. He's 6 weeks old. As per advice, we left alone and didn't attempt to interact for 6 days so he could settle in.

We then fed him treats by hand and he took the treats gently and seemed comfortable. The next night we did the same and attempted to stroke him gently with a soft toothbrush while he ate the treat but he got spooked and went back to his burrow.

Since then he's been skittish and won't come out until we're asleep (so at least 2am). I haven't seen him for three nights now but I know that he's using his wheel and sand bath and drinking and eating his food at night as I've compared everything when I wake up.

The girl I adopted him from said he was friendly and used to being handled so I know it's just a process of starting over with him.

I guess I'm worried he doesn't trust us any more and will always just wait until 2am to come out. I'm adding tissue with our scent his bed every few days but I think it's best to just leave him be and let him dictate the pace from now on?

Hi. Lasagna is still very young and very new to your household. I think he'll start coming out again when he gets used to you being about and you can gain his trust again. In the meantime, welcome to HC!

Don't worry too much, lasagna will slowly get used to you. Have you tried talking gently to him so he gets used to your voice and scent? My hamster took a while to settle in but now knows that when she hears or smells me near she'll be getting toys or food!

You were right! He started coming out again and after a few days of just talking to him while spot cleaning, leaving a treat behind after cleaning, leaving tissues with my scent in the cage, he responds to my voice now and looks for treats! Taking it slow though.

Thank you for this! Just as I read your reply the other night he emerged from his burrow. He's been coming out every night since looking for treats. I'm going to just stick with feeding him treats for now and will work on picking him up or petting him when he gets more comfortable.
