Question questions about my new hammy

hello! im a newcomer here and a beginner hamster owner so ive got a couple of questions about my new syrian baby )

i adopted him recently from a friend and im still not sure of his fur type or colouring! my best guess is that he is around a month old since he's pretty small for a syrian and also very active. there are a few tufts of fluffy long hair around his waist but the rest of his hair is pretty short so im not sure if his hair is going to grow longer or if he is a shorthaired. his whole body and fur is the same colour, a light grey and a little bit of beige but im finding it hard to describe because lighting changes how it looks from time to time. he's got dark red eyes and pink ears and feet too.

ive been trying to put a name on his colouring but nothing comes to mind and quick google searches have brought up nothing! i would appreciate if someone here could help me find out what fur type of hamster he is! the closest ive got right now is a light grey which can look pinkish at time. i have attached a few images for reference!

ty in advance for any help

Hello and welcome

He is a beautiful long haired version on my little hammy Boromir who recently went to the bridge!

He has a lovely skirt (the long haired bit!) and I believe his colouring would be mink, he is young so they tend to start off beigy.

He could also be dove. Young minks and doves look quite similar. Can you see any eye rings?

He's adorable x

He is definitley a long haired, i think when they get older they can get really fluffy. Im not sure if that happens to all of them, but it's what happened to my long haired Syrian boy. He lost his bum fluff and grew it everywhere else, he is one fluff ball now.

Your boy is lovely. I don't know much about colouring, but he is gorgeous. Congratulations.

Love his skirt & pink ears! I’m not too good on colours either but as has been said he’s definitely long haired, look forward to seeing more of him.

thank you! ive looked as closely as i can and no sign of eye rings 🤨 im thinking he’s a dove but he does seem a bit more pink and lighter than other doves i noticed! i think it’s safe to assume from the other replies that his hair is going to get really long all over too , any tips for taking care of the long hair of my fluffball to-be? thank you again for the help 😊

I know some people brush (you can get a child's soft toothbrush) their longhaired hamsters everyday, but I rarely do it, Twinkle manages to groom himself perfectly fine. As they get older and less mobile you may need to help them a bit more with brushing or if you see bedding getting tangled up in the fur.

You might like my thread about Twinkle, my long haired white syrian, you can see how short/flat his coat was in the photos/videos to start with, then one day he just turned into a fluffmonster.

gosh twinkle is truly so adorable!! 🥺 he grew up so well! thank you sm for sharing

one last thing! forgive me for the endless questions but i do have one more query ^__^ i noticed that doey (the little dove) has a sort of brownish ginger (?) mom. the rest of his litter all have dark/mixed or brown colours. doey is the only light fur with red eyes which i find rather fascinating!

his mom also has a little bit of white around her belly, however doey is completely one colour! may i ask how this is possible? im not sure about the dads fur colour, ive got to ask the breeder whose male mated with the mom.

im learning quite a ton along the way and i appreciate all your help so much

My possibly/bad dove hamster had a white stripe down his belly. Without a pedigree they could be bad doves (show standard wise) or minks..or somewhere between. I can't remember the genetics, I THINK mink is possibly cream with umborous. However, if you don't plan to show him, does it really matter? He is adorable and I think i'll have a soft spot for him as he looks like a long hair version of my Boromir (in my avatar).

Sometimes a sand bath can help with long haired. The type of bedding you use will be vital as some sticks to the fur more. Some people trim their hamsters, others let it go! A little toothbrush is fine and any bad knots can gently be cut out

Never be afraid to ask questions, it is what our community is here for

If he was from a breeder, the breeder should be able to confirm his lineage and what colour he is then. They are harder to tell apart younger though as they darken
