Default my hamster wakes up really late pls help:(

ever since i bought my male syrian hamster it tends to sleep the whole day. it falls asleep probably at 7 or 8 am and wakes up at 2am. So its really hard for me to spend time with my hamster and i would have to always stay up really late to get to play with him. And its said that changing his sleeping patterns can cause him stress so i didnt do anything about it for days now but starting to make it really hard for me since im not getting enough sleep.

My hamster doesn't seem like he has any health issue but he just sleeps alot i was hoping if there is any solution to this problem.

Some of my hamsters have preferred to do their own thing in the evening or late at night & are happier to interact with me in the mornings, your ham stays up quite late in the morning (for a ham!) so maybe try spending time with him then.

the only way to reasonably attempt to change their sleep schedules is to feed them at the same time every day when you want him to come out. it doesn’t always work but he may pop his head out for a few minutes to get a snack if he starts to learn you always feed him at that time.

Sometimes you can get them to wake earlier but it needs to done very gradually, so don’t suddenly try waking your ham hours before it would normally get up, you can try giving him something like a nice treat when he wakes so he associates it with that then begin to slowly wake him a little earlier just by rustling the bedding gently or a something similar.
It may be that he is awake earlier but just doesn’t want to come out so try to find things he enjoys when he does come out as that will encourage him.

Can you not interact with your hamster in the morning? Why should you change the time your hamster wakes - that doesn't seem very fair to me, he is acting like a normal hamster. How would you feel if someone was to start walking you up so they could play with you when you wanted to sleep??

i understand its going to be really stressful for the hamster if i wake him up at a specific time but i need to also look after the amount of sleep i get. i go to sleep at 10 pm it gives me only 4 hours sleep to wake up at 2 am then classes start at 7am so everything gets messed up. you might not really know how hard it is to not get sleep for weeks .do understand both sides .

if you still suggest me not to change and just go with the sleeping pattern i will do so.

Hello. I do feel for you wanting to spend time with your hamster who only wakes at unsuitable times for you. When we first got our hamster I made myself really really tired waiting up all night for him and then even when he did come out he just kind of slept in the playpen and I had to put him back and I worried about him a lot. Later I realised he was very active in the mornings so I started getting him out about 7.30 for an hour every morning before the school run and he seems to love that playing and eating his porridge. Is there any chance you could go to bed yourself a bit earlier say 9.30pm and then get up a bit earlier say 6am and try getting him out then for half hour if he is active then? Then you would still get decent sleep and get to see him at a time that suits him? I refresh my hamsters food bowl around 4pm and I always shake it a bit so he can hear it. He usually comes out to investigate and I can give him a stroke then. If 6.30am is not suitable for you, maybe try shaking his food bowl when you refresh his food and if he comes out to investigate give him a little stroke and see if he will come out for a short time. I'm not an expert at all as I've only had our hamster a few months I just dont want you to get over tired and stressed like I did, you need your sleep as well as the hamster. I'm sure you will eventually get in to a rhythm that works for you both.
