Meet Mabel!
Hello everyone!
I've had Mabel for 2 weeks today and now that she is more confident and active, I've managed to get some decent pictures. The first is her waiting for more treats and the second and third were taken today, as she was stuffing her cheeks with bedding and toilet paper to take back to her nest. I can't believe how much she's grown in just 2 weeks!
I'm so pleased with how she is doing. For the first week or so, she was occasionally chewing bars and bar climbing, but after a few adjustments to her cage as suggested by other members on this website, that has all stopped! She seems a lot more relaxed and happier, and is even starting to take interest in her toys and chews - finally!
She is happy to take food from my fingers and palm of my hand, and can often be found staring at me from her cage in the wee hours, which seems to be her way of asking for treats. She allows me to stroke her, and today in our first bathtub bonding session I was able to briefly pick her up. She then gave me a little nip but it wasn't at all aggressive of painful, I was feeding her from my palm so my hand inevitably smelt like her food. Any ideas to weaken the association between my hand and food to stop the nipping?
Does anyone have any idea of what colour she is? I've been searching for days but can't seem to figure it out, and I keep changing my mind on whether she is long haired or just very fluffy!

Re: Meet Mabel!
What a cutie, when she bites I would eek and jump a little, enough to make her jump a tiny bit, don’t frighten her, just a little surprise, in the same way perhaps her siblings would have responded or her mother when she was younger. I prefer to offer small food in their cage, from a bowl or little plate, I only finger feed things I can hold one end of whilst the other end is taken, ie a broccoli floret, then just have a routine around when they are given, I put mine in the cage when Polo is out so that after her out of cage time when she goes back in her nibbles are waiting for her. I think it’s just about building a routine which will come with time.

Re: Meet Mabel!
Mabel is lovely! I’m not too good on Syrian colours but I’m sure someone else will know.
Good to hear she’s settling in well now, I wouldn’t worry about the odd little nip, she’s still figuring out what’s what really & will soon learn the difference between food & hands, it’s best to just try not to react at all if you can, I wouldn’t do anything tike blowing on her which isn’t pleasant for them & can just make there interaction with you a negative one rather than an enjoyable positive time.

Re: Meet Mabel!
Mabel is so cute! Based on my experience with the hamsters I’ve had, they kind of figure out not to bite your hand by accident over time. My hamster that I have now is very friendly and would never bite my hand on purpose, but one time I picked her up with jacket sleeves over my hands and she started chewing on it with my finger in it. Sometimes they get a little confused about what’s part of you and what isn’t, but for the most part I think they always figure it out.
