Question What should I do?

I’m getting a Syrian soon. I found an ethical breeder and we discussed contactless adoption (end of June). He is going to be living in half of a detolf as I have a dwarf already living in the other side. Considering the depth of the detolf, I have 2 options with wheel size and I was wondering what would be the best option.

1st option: Put a 12 inch wheel in and leave off a lid ( this means I can’t put in that much bedding though which is something I wanted to do)

2nd option: Use an 11 inch wheel in and use a lid (although from the pictures the hammy is quite large and don’t know if he would fit on the 11 inch (he’s easily 175g and never owning a Syrian before i don’t know if that is a healthy weight)

Thanks for reading and I hope that I can find an answer to it.

I really don't think you'll find half a detolf would be large enough for a Syrian, they really do need a good amount of space, most need at least 100x50cm & with a 12" wheel you wouldn't have the depth for a suitable amount of substrate, even with an 11" wheel it would be too shallow to allow for burrowing & leaving a tank cage without a lid is far too risky, also hamsters have been known to get through the dividers people have made when two are kept in a detolf so tbh I think you would do better to get a separate cage for your new Syrian.

Ok thanks, I’ve ordered another detolf and Kallax to put in my hamster room. If I put shallow substrate (about 1-2 inches) and toys and a wheel in half of the cage and as much bedding as possible in the other half with a border and a tube (with a lid obviously) would I be able to leave a lid off of the shallow end of the cage to put a 12inch wheel in there? Or should I build a raised lid so I can put more substrate in? Also I’ve researched it and I’m not totally sure if 175g is a healthy weight?
Thanks btw

I would build a raised lid if you can, hamsters are notorious for finding ways to escape, e.g. they could climb up the back of the wheel, they could pile substrate up etc

175g is fine for a hamster - there is a good thread on here re hamster weight that shows basically they can weigh anything, It can also depend on the length (size of them )

I think a raised lid would be best if you can make one.

This is the Syrian weight thread if you want to have a look, they do vary quite a bit but it will give you some comparisons.
