Smile Cornbread's Thread

Hello everyone. My 17 yr old daughter and I are new hamster owners. Our little Cornbread came to us from a friend of my daughter's who got him from someone else, so I'm not sure how old he is or how well he's been treated. But I can tell he already loves us and is so sociable. I mean, I'm in love at this point. haha

I have a couple questions about his behavior:

1. We got him a new "bathroom" sandbox. He took right to it. Pees in the corners and cleans himself in the middle area. But, I'm puzzled that he always poos in his igloo nest. I have seen him actually throw the poo out the front door. It's hilarious to see, but it's also confusing why he also doesn't his 2s in the sandbox. Is this normal and/or can he be retrained to poo in the box too?

2. I've coined his new motto as "Always Be Escaping" lol. We have quite a few things for him to do in his new natural bin habitat, and try to change toys out but will he ever stop trying to escape?

Thanks for any help you can offer!

Hi!

Congratulations on your new family member!

As far as the poo goes, hamsters seldom poo in the same place that they wee so I don't think you will train him to do both poos and wees in his litter box. They very often will poo in their nests and some certainly do throw their poo out quite deliberately which is quite comical!

Hamster poo is not really a hygiene concern, being odourless and usually dry. In fact their poo contains quite a lot of unabsorbed nutrients and hamsters can actually eat their poo in order to extract the maximum nutritional value from it. It sounds gross but it is how they are designed. I wouldn't worry about where he poops.

As for escaping...hamsters are absolutely notorious for their ability to escape. They are expert escape artists. This doesn't necessarily reflect at all on how well you have provided for their entertainment- you could provide all the toys in the world but most hamsters would still find the quickest way out!

I hope this helps!

Yes, hamster poo is not something to worry about and they usually poo where or near where they sleep and often have a tidy up and chuck the poos out. My Syrian Henry chucks his poos out of his coconut outhouse almost nightly.

Your Cornbread must be so so happy to have found a loving forever home and i'm looking forward to see more photos of him. He's a very handsome hamster.

Escaping depends on the hamster's personality to an extend i think. I have four hamsters and only one tries to escape but i wouldn't trust any of them not to have a go given the opportunity. Maybe Cornbread wants to spend more time with you and your family outside of his cage. Does he have a big, bottomless house that sits on top of the substrate and a big wheel of at least 10in?

You say he lives in a bin habitat and so do two of mine. How does he try to escape, by climbing on top of things or hopping up the sides? Does his bin habitat have a meshed window he can look out from?

Thank you so much for your very helpful replies.

I'm happy to know that he is normal. If he's okay with poo in front of his front door, more power to him.

As far as his cage goes, he is in a deep/wide bin and we're in the process of getting the lid all fixed up with mesh. I had not thought about putting a mesh window on the side for him. Thanks for the idea!

(Forgive me, I'm still trying to figure out how to figure out replying and who I'm replying to. )

Ventilation is very important so meshed windows are necessary together with a meshed lid in my opinion. Aside from the the practical aspect, I like bin cages to look decorative rather than just a plastic box.
I recently connected the bin cage and playpen bin cage of one of my dwarfs and that's the colourful result.
The cages now sit on a long DIY table.

I wouldn't bother with quotes tbh, they do tend to make threads very long & hard to navigate, if you want to reply to a specific person you can just refer to them by name & it's perfectly clear.
Quotes can be useful if you want to reply to a very specific point & just quote that portion of a post or if you want to reply to a post a long way back in a thread that otherwise may not be clear.

Okay, thank you all!

I LOVE your bin cage set up RiaP. I wish I could just buy the stuff and get someone to build it for us because neither my daughter or I are very crafty and have very few tools.
