Smile Handling

Hi I'm new to owing a hamster, infact she's my daughter's.
We have had her about 3 wks, she will take food off me and we have stroked her but I'm a little scared about picking her up, or which way is best to go about it. The guy at the pet shop kind of put me off when he mentioned 'the teeth' .

Any advice is greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Post Re: Handling

Hello,

I understand your concern for your hamster biting you. Maybe start off with just petting her. Then start to put treats on your hamster to encourage your hamster to come towards you. Repeat that for a week until your hamster has less hesitation before coming towards your hand.

After that, put treats on your hands again but now get the hamster to completely sit on your palms. That step might take longer since your hamster needs time to get use to it. When your hamster in confident, try to slowly lift up your hands to around 5-10 cm above the ground. Let that practice for a few days.

Finally, when your hamster is ready. Lift it up and carry it to a playpen or another cage depending on what you have. By that time, your hamster should be able to trust you. Try to use sunflower seeds that can be found in your local pet store. Use that when training your hamster.

Overall, bonding takes time. It takes time for you to build a strong relationship with your hamster. Be patient, don't scare it or else your hamster might not trust you as much. Just follow the steps and slowly work up! If it bites you, try again another day. Good luck with your hamster!
