I don't know, unfortunately. I got him from Petco. I really wanted to do a rescue, or at least a breeder, but the Humane Society (where we adopted our dog) only has guinea pigs and there were no breeders around here.

Hi again, all. I know that this question has probably been asked numerous times before, but is it normal that Pencil doesn't come out until super late? I know he's been coming out because there have been a few times where I am up at 3 am (letting the dog out, that beast ) and I see him running on the wheel. He also eats the veggies I leave for him. He just still seems absolutely terrified. A couple of times, when I approach his cage, he darts back into his house (inverted shoebox). I know there are hamsters that never warm up to humans, and I know I was used to Teddy, who was pretty much tame from day 1 and loved human contact, but should I resign myself to this? Or do I just need to give it some more time? Is there anything I can do to encourage him to come out earlier at night?

It is perfectly normal for a hammie to wait until super late at night to come out. One of the forum members recently set up a night vision camera on their hamsters' cages and they found that their hamsters were also active around 03h00am. So your little one is not unusual.

Also, it is very normal for a new hamster to be very skittish, even for weeks after moving in. The only thing that will reduce this is contact with you. The more you handle him the more comfortable he'll become.

Thanks, Vierville. I just have to be patient and wake up specifically to play with him.

Great news, after months of trying to coax pencil into our hands, we were able to take him out of the cage and into the bathtub! I didn't get any good pictures, but my son was so happy, he started crying.

Thank you, Luna! I was able to get a picture, too. He's turning out to be so sweet. Hasn't tried to bit, super calm. We had him climb the stairs last night and he loved it. Definitely worth the wait. Has anyone ever had this happen where it seems like they changed overnight?

That's a really sweet photo, great to hear how he's coming round after he kept you waiting!
