Very shy hamster?
Hi everybody...
Please help...I have syrian hamster for about 3 weeks. I have already taming process and I can pick my Mike ( hamster ☺️ ) and take Him on my hands, stroke Him etc. But I managed to do so only few times as He does not come out of his hiding often. I know they are most active at night, but I can hear Him being awake from about 21.30. I do have camera at night so I can see Him, the moment I leave the room, lights out etc - He is out in 10 min, but when I am off, I am waiting for him to come out and some days even until past midnight and He is not coming out. And again, when I go away, he comes out.
When He is out, I managed to catch him few times, like early in the morning before work, He is not afraid of me, he eats from my hand, He comes out on my hand and does not bite or try to escape, just very pleasant bonding. But it is so rare when I can catch Him out.
Pleas advise, is that normal still after 3 weeks? I so would like to bond more but I do not want to do the opposite and scare him off.
Thank you for any advise...
Jo...

Re: Very shy hamster?
He sounds like a shy little guy. Sometimes it can take a very long time to tame a hamster and varies but it seems like he's pretty accustomed to your hands so far. What you could try is turning out the lights, possibly have the door cracked so you can see into the room somewhat and just sit by the cage. I did this with my hamster and she would become more active. You can rub toilet paper or tissues on your hands/body to get your scent onto it and put it in his cage. You can talk to him and give him treats when you see him in the morning.

Re: Very shy hamster?
I don’t have a Syrian but it took about 6 weeks for my dwarf to start looking for his treat when he saw me. Everyday I would give him 1 sunflower seed or other little treat he liked and pet him for a few minutes.
Now he knows what to expect and is happy to get his reward. Keep trying !
