Default Male or Female??

Hi everyone, this is my second post since joining the forum last week (my first was about bin cage sizes and which is best for a Syrian). So I have my bin cage all prepared in terms of the mesh lid being constructed and also have a few little toys - wooden platform, bendy bridge, puzzle playground and some cardboard stuff too - but now I have to make the big decision on what gender Syrian I will be bringing home. A bit of background is that I’ve owned 4 hamsters in the past which have all been female and any other pets I have had have been female also. I guess I just feel like I can connect more to my pet if it’s the same gender as me which might not make sense at all haha but it’s just the way I’ve grown up and had pets. Therefore, I was initially of course set on getting a female but then I read about how female Syrians tend to be more energetic and active whereas males are more calm and easy-going. I would really love to bond well with this hamster and have a good taming experience with it which would be easier with a calmer hamster (which would mean I’d be better off with a male from what I’ve read) but then I’ve always had female pets and just prefer the idea of having a little girl hamster haha. So basically if anyone has any suggestions if you know whether it’s a certain thing that females are more active and males are calmer or if this can be the opposite as I know all hamsters have individual personalities of course but I’ve saw this on quite a few sites about Syrians so am just on the fence. Any help is appreciated and sorry for the long post!

I’ve only owned males myself but have met/looked after plenty of female hamsters for friends over the years. My experience has been that males are more chilled out and handleable but that could just be down to the personalities of the particular female hams who I have encountered.

I had male hamsters when i was a kid, totally chilled out hamsters, cuddles, sit in my dressing gown pockets, just lay on my bed etc. As an adult i have only had female hamsters, it was a shock at first, as it was nothing like I remembered as a child. I couldn't understand it, it was only when a friend pointed out how crazy her female hamsters were when she was a kid, that i read up on it a bit more. Now I understand the female behaviour a bit better, I love it. I like watching their crazy antics when they are free roaming. I think even if you got a male, it's not going to be a guarantee whether that it will be chilled out and cuddly. I've had no problem taming either my female or male hamsters.

If I remember everyone then 4 girls and 3 boys, so largely an even number. Both make wonderful pets. The biggest thing is if you want to smell your female in season every 4 days or if you want your boys warm testes nestled in your hand, neither is a deal breaker though.

(Sorry if anyone is offended by my remark about remembering everyone, I assure you I have loved and adored all of my furbabies, but I have had a lot of pets over the years and remembering the past 23 years (since I adopted my first hamster) is hard at the best of times.)

This is really helpful thank you! I did think it was a behaviour thing between the genders and not just personality due to how much I have read about it. I will take your comment into consideration when getting my new baby

Thank you for the reply! Really helpful to know that you did notice a difference between the genders, I would have been the opposite to you if I did get a male and he was more chilled out than all the females I’ve had haha so I’m glad I’m learning about it before I get my next one. And yes I understand that all personalities are different so even if I got a male he may not be cuddly with me etc and a female may not be so crazy but I’m looking forward to bonding with and attempting to tame my new hamster no matter the gender

Thanks for the reply! Yes I have read about the female smell when they’re in season, however like I said I have owned 4 females and have never actually noticed any sort of smell with them. This could just be that the particular ones I had didn’t smell and if I got a female this time I could notice it more. And I love your comment about the boys haha that is actually one thing that has me questioning getting a male as I am used to female pets so wouldn’t know what to expect from a male in that area😂I’m sure it wouldn’t bother me though I will love this hamster no matter what’s going on down there haha but thank you for the comment it is really helpful

Simply go for the hamster you feel a connection with regardless of gender. There will be a particular one who "speaks" or appeals to you for whatever reason.

When i chose my Syrian at the pet shop he was first in the queue trying to get out of the shared tank and then he sat on my knee so there was no way i could have put him back again.

My Robo i adopted because he had been in the adoption centre for seven months and i couldn't get him out of my head for that reason. I hadn't seen him because he was always hidden under the wood chips.

My dwarf has issues which i noticed at the adoption centre so i took him home. My reasoning was that there are plenty of other hamsters more likely to get chosen than this one.

Can't wait to see the lucky girl or boy hamster who is going to move in with you.

Thank you for the advice. That is lovely to hear about the ones you’ve adopted and taken home to give a loving place too I bet they all loved you so much❤️
I have just been and got back from the pet shop with a little boy. He is a bit scared at the minute which is totally understandable so giving him his space and a day or two to get accustomed to his new home and will be putting a post about him on the thread when he’s more settled
