That's great! Good, healthy weight too.
Sounds like Charlie was a bit of a character. Do you have a thread on here with photos of Charlie?

Yes Charlie has his own thread - under Syrian hamsters. Unfortunately most of the photos were photobucket ones and either don’t show up well due to a watermark now photo bucket don’t support them any more. Some don’t show at all. One if his videos has sine photos at the end - I’ll link that.

Pickle has settled nicely into his cage and seems very happy and out and about a bit more in his cage. The big front door has made a huge difference as well and he seems more relaxed. Less clanging of bars and I think the lower height makes a difference. He actually came out voluntarily last night and had a good bit of free roaming and some sofa time. He is still quite a shy hamster in a way as he seems to just like sitting under something when he's out. He nearly dug himself down under the sofa seat cushions when there was nothing to sit under on the sofa - quite a funny moment with just his butt and back legs sticking out. So he still does his "Ostrich" thing

Here he is out and about in his cage and not the slightest bit bothered by my hand in the cage putting food out. A bit of foraging for nesting material and happy with the cage door open. Photos aren't very sharp due to low light and using my phone.

He and Moo were both out at the same time doing the same things - I wonder if they have got into a kind of sync! Pickle snacked, Moo snacked, Pickle drank from his bottle, Moo drank from his bottle. Moo didn't forage for bedding though - he has a slightly bigger nesting compartment and huge nest already

Here's a little video of him in his cage. The other video I've put on a separate thread as it has both of them on drinking at the same time

Potty update. Pickle continues to both nest and pee in both compartments of his house. Hmm. One compartment has the litter tray in and he does use it but also nests on top of it and has another nest he pees in. It is fairly easy to spot clean but I don't like having to keep discarding part of his nest. I shall persevere with encouraging use of the litter tray! I think he maybe sees both comparments as "houses" so likes to pee and nest within his house - but neither compartment is big enough to do both. I might need to change his style of house at some point so it's one larger space with a litter tray in. The middle section of that house is just an entrance really and I do like seeing his head pop out of the top hole. But could move the roof section so the hole is at one end - possibly. I'll wait till he's a bit more settled.

Lovely photos of Pickle, glad he's settled happily & the new set up is working well for both of you.He sounds really sweet when he's out.
Good luck with the potty training! I've just about given up on my Chineseysf! I do find the rooms in some of the houses are a bit impractical, hope you find something that works with him though.

Maybe too many rooms confuses him and he would have clearer nesting and peeing areas in a house that's just one big room. Maybe he wants more continuous space.

I couldn't imagine Henry in a labyrinth house because his nest is huge and he likes to eat in bed so has a huge hoard at paw.

Pickle is so handsome and so relaxed while being watched and filmed eating.

Thank you Cypher and Ria. He doesn’t actually have a labyrinth house - it’s the long three compartment one from Rodipet but I cut a front entrance door as well as the hole on top. Effectively there are two “rooms”/houses either side of the entrance compartment - but yes I think he’d be better with one long open house like the one in the Alexander that fits in the base. I could achieve that quite easily if I hadn’t already put a door in the middle! A project for another day.

So he has the entrance compartment with the door in the middle and two interior walls. Can't see why you couldn't cut these walls down or, if you don't want to "ruin" an expensive Rodipet house and keep it for a future hamster, you could buy him the Ferplast guinea pig house for a tenner to see how he gets on with that. You could cut a hole in the roof so he can still pop out.

I cut the roof into two sections so i can lift off the small part to check on his hoard, old food etc without disturbing him in his nest which is under the larger section.
