What a lovely little guy! What did you use for the playpen? Wood? I'm thinking about getting something like that for Jupiter.

It’s from Zooplus. It’s great - too high for Syrians to get out and comes apart for easy storage. It wasn’t cheap at £25 but I spent almost that much making a diy one out of vortex which wasn’t. As good. Last time I looked they weren’t selling it any more though, which is a shame.

Maybe I can find something similar here!

I have made the unusual decision to move Pickle to a slightly smaller cage with better front access and he seems fine with it. It is much better for me to interact with him as well. He is a different personality to Newt who was quite gregarious and would come to one of the Barney cage front doors and want to come out regularly. Pickle is lovely out of the cage but a sleepyhead and difficult to get out. I think he found the height unnerving at first so I had filled it up with things and then couldn’t do much through the top door either. So the Barney cage wasn’t working for him and I had to keep taking the bars off to get him to walk into a tube. That was getting a pain for me and a bit risky in case he jumped out. So I decided I really needed a big front opening door with Pickle. Now Moo is in the Savic plaza and easy to interact with through the big door plus he comes to the door himself. But I didn’t want to move both of them. So thought about getting another Savic plaza - but it is still tall. So in the end I have moved him to the Savic Mickey 2XL and it is way easier for me as I can get closer to him and he seems quite happy with it. I let him have a play in it first and he went to sleep haha. He is a sleepyhead.

So moved everything over. It is more or less the same set up but he loses the shelf width and shelf on the left plus one of the sputniks. He seemed quite happy with it all - a bit surprised to find nothing on the other side of his Sputnik but otherwise seems fine and we had a little chat tonight. He even came out with the lights on.

I can now reach much easier to spot clean his house (he hasn’t quite got the idea of the litter tray! And pees in both compartments of his house) and it is so much easier to reach him.

I felt mean moving him to a smaller cage but it’s still a good size and I will see how he goes. He loves being out of the cage but I think the faff with taking the bars off was making him nervous. He's not a digger so the substrate depth being a bit lower in one corner isn't an issue.

I put him in the pet carrier while I was moving everything over and he sat for a really long cuddle after he came out of that. It was like he was saying "don't put me back in there again!" And being very affectionate. Then had a little run around the living room and into the cage where he checked everything out and then went to bed. I set up the nightcam last night so at some point have a video of him in the cage.

Oh and I have finally got the blooming yellow bottle holder removed from the Savic Mickey 2xl - it has been stuck there for years and it took a power drill to finally get it off! So if anyone gets a Ferplast sippy bottle, don’t fix the bottle holder to the bars - it drove me mad not being able to remove it!

I found your reasoning very interesting Serendipity. You know that I have a hamster heaven cage and always start my babies off in it because of the large front door. Same size as the Mickey isn’t it? I can only get one Sputnik in it when in use too. Like Newt, Maestro comes to the front door of the barney when he wants a treat but wants to go straight into his fuzzbutt for that. It does depend on personality so much as mentioned so often here. Pickle could well settle down happily in the new set up and spend time out of the cage when he wants.

Yes it’s the same size as the Hamster Heaven. I think it’s a good idea to start them off in a smaller cage and then upgrade. Newt went straight into the Barney and was fine. Pickle is a different personality. It was a combination of that and me struggling with the cage because he doesn’t come to the door. I’ll see how he goes. Charlie didn’t come to the cage door either in either cage! Regardless of size. Moo is very laid back about the height. Pickle is more cautious. Can’t fit a silent runner in of course. But he has a space saving long house so it leaves plenty of floor area.

Pickle seems happy in his new cage and settled straight away but then it is mostly exactly the same as before except for one end. He still likes to be left alone in his cage and doesn’t come out till the lights are out. I video’d him the last couple of nights with the nightcam and he still has his usual routine of snacking, foraging, snacking, running in his wheel. He still sits for a wash at the end where the shelf used to be in his old cage.

The only real difference is it is easier for me to get him out without stressing him and to have less of a barrier. I will see how he goes but suspect he is just a hamster who likes his bed! Charlie used to be the same and always needed coaxing out but was also lovely and tame once out.

I don’t feel bad about Pickle having a smaller cage as he free roams in the living room when out - it was getting him to come out that was the issue! He is the only hamster I’ve ever had that doesn’t come out when the veg appears. And sleeps all evening. He’s a little sweetie and knows what he wants but I think it’s important to keep up the interaction and handling.

The new set up looks lovely and Pickle seems to have more space to move around in. It's still a big cage and there's no need to feel guilty.
Henry's like Pickle. Spends a lot of time in his house, rarely asks to come out of his cage and i have to be an opportunist and pick him up when he's near the door before he disappears back in his house again to get some interaction with him. Like Pickle he enjoys his free roaming time once he's out but getting him out is another story. He also waits till lights are out or i've gone to bed before he comes out of his house and he can't be tempted out with food or treats in the evening. By the morning all his fresh food and linseeds have disappeared though. Don't think there's much we can do. They are just very independent hamsters who make sure that everything happens on their terms.

Thank you Ria. They do vary in personality - our last Syrian would sit at the door wanting to come out!

Anyway success tonight- he walked into a tube and I lifted him out. Because I could actually reach him with the tube! So he had a little bit of out of cage time this evening and got weighed. Didn’t want to overdo it too soon. He is a healthy 192 Grammes. I haven’t actually weighed him before as I got obsessive about it last time haha. He looked about right so I didn’t worry.

He is absolutely adorable and keeps reminding me of Charlie in terms of his behaviour- except he has a less grumpy disposition than Charlie.
