Yes there was definitely a lot of whisker twitching and he was looking right at the table where his cage had been. Thank you for reminding me of that nice memory . There was the synchronised drinking as well. They had been out of sync for some time when Moo was failing but I think hamsters must be able to sense something when one is dying.

I just don’t want to be overrun with moths! Hope I don’t find any more.

Strangely I have noticed on both occasions that the hamster doesn’t eat them or even react to sharing their nest with the larvae and the odd moth. There is no abandoning the nest or squeaking and running away - they just seem unfazed.

With all the upheavals, it’s good that Pickle is settling into his old cage again.
I do like those fuzzbutt stack hammocks. I have one that I used for out of cage playtime but is nice that Pickle is not a chewer and so it can be left in his cage.

Thank you Coco. I don’t usually risk it until they are old and past chewing! And Pickle is only about 15 months old - but it has been fine. Nugget had one when he had his tumour and loved it. Pickle doesn’t seem too interested in it but it’s some overhead cover.

Pickle’s plaza is still in the garden. It was under snow for about a week, snow melted and then we had another 6 inches for a few days! Reckon the moths and eggs will be well and truly frozen so cleaning it and the bagged up contents should be fairly straightforward now. Although technically -8 is not as cold as a freezer so I had probably best still use disinfectant.

An update on Pickle who has been awol a lot during the winter months and not wanting to come out at all. Nesting cosily away. He has decided it is spring now I think and is more active and out in his cage in the evening around feeding time and been quite active on the sofa. The couple of times I dragged him out after Christmas he just wanted to go straight back to his cage again.

He is a lovely big bundle of fluff and full of energy sometimes, but mostly so laid back that he has a quiet life and likes his nest.

It's nice to see him more perky again as I did think he wasn't quite the same after Moo died. But he's adjusted to his new location in a different room well. He seems happy back in his Mickey 2XL and not interested in much apart from food. Ignores his hammock completely!

The hamster corner in the living room has now been taken over by teenage stepson's computer desk and set up! I do actually still have room for two hamster cages in different rooms but focusing on Pickle for now as life is busier.

Also stepson is talking about wanting to get a cat. Hmm.

I'd tell stepson that cats are for girls and that a bearded dragon is far cooler.

Say hello to Pickle from us, Serendipity. Good to have him out and about after a cosy and lazy time over the winter.

Pickle is quite possibly the most laid back hamster we have ever had. Lovely and gentle too. He still scales the sofa like Spiderham and then does his daring walk along the back occasionally looking over the edge. With me there to stop him if he tries! He never does try and just climbs down behind a blanket again. It is an interesting obstacle course as Oh does his paperwork on that sofa and there are often piles of books and lever arch files to clamber over and find a route between. Last night he emerged from a lever arch file looking very perky at having found a “tunnel” along the wide end part.

Anyway as he has always been laid back and is now at a “mellow “ age he is even more laid back if that is possible! When I went to pick him up in the cage I missed slightly and he ended up lying on his back on the substrate. And just laid there not making much effort to right himself - like - pick me up again!

Anyway he is quite adorable as ever and also likes his own company and food is his only real reason to emerge from his nest. If it’s late he pulls the bottle out of its holder with a clash. He will be about 18 months old by now (need to check as I’ve lost track of time!)

Haha! I had to laught at him just lying there on his back waiting for you to straighten him up again!

Is he back in his Plaza again and what happened to the pantry moths?

I didn't find any in the cages and wasn't really that worried about the kitchen but saw the odd one flying around every couple of weeks or so.
