Aww, he's missing Moo too.
Lovely photos, especially the one where he pokes his nose out.
Do you put the snooze cube in his cage or is it for out of cage play time?

I just use them for out of cage time. With a very old doddery hamster I sometimes put a fleece item in the cage as they are past chewing things usually by then

I think he has been a bit freaked by Moo dying actually. Moo's cage was underneath his and I think Pickle must have been very much aware when Moo passed. Plus he is no longer there of course. They had been in a sort of sync sometimes and when Moo stopped coming out of his house, Pickle did too.

Such a lovely set of photos of Pickle. I am so pleased that he has a snooze cube or two to enjoy out of his cage. Peeking out of it is so cute.
Maestro loved his and would climb into it from his front door. I still have it next to his memorial stone. I am not surprised that Moo sleeps on in his.

Thank you Coco. Yes they are excellent for getting a hamster out of the cage easily. They just walk in and easier to lift out than a tube. Pickle is used to walking into a tube but I’ll try him with the snooze cube next time.

As mentioned on the other thread, Pickle has had to move out of his lovely Savic Plaza, which he had only been in for 3 or 4 months - due to a moth outbreak. I carefully set up the Mickey 2XL for him- couldn't use anything from his Plaza and needed him moved before I could start the whole disinfection process. At least it is a cage he is familiar with as he moved out of it into the Plaza. Used the wheel from his playpen which he immediately jumped into with a happy look. Used the built in house from the Skyline Ted - it is a bit too short for the cage but filled the gaps with bedding.

I had two bendy bridges which had been used in the playpen. And a spare sputnik. I was a bit short on toys so decided to try him with a Fuzzbutts "stack a fuzz" hammock". It's not too big and is like two hammocks joined together so they can crawl inside or sit on top. It also gave some overhead shelter. He isn't a chewer so I thought I'd try it. He hasn't chewed it so I'm leaving it in. Caught him sitting on top of it the first night but he bolted back in his house.

Poor Pickle - this is now his third cage change. The cage is also in a different room. I needed to do that initially to have a big clean up but decided that actually this might help as he has been a bit jittery since Moo died (whose cage was under his). So it's a change of scene and all scents removed (Moo's).

I think I'm going to leave him in it now rather than upheave him again - not sure yet. But means he doesn't have his labyrinth house.

He is settling in fine but was a bit reclusive for a few days. Last night I had him out on the sofa and he seemed happy and it was something familiar but they do think. He sat on top of the sofa looking across at where his Plaza used to be and sat there for ages. You could see he was thinking and his whiskers twitching a lot. I had a little chat with him and he set off exploring the sofa again.

So although it's a big upheaval I think the timing of the change was good - after Moo died.

I'll get round to taking a picture eventually! It took absolutely ages setting up cage to move him too. Initially I set up the Skyline Ted (about the size of a standard duna multy) which is a travel/play cage and has a good built in house that maximiises the space. Thinking it might just be for a day. Then realised it would probably be for longer than a day as the whole cage and contents need disinfecting. And the Ted doesn't have great access - Pickle doesn't get on with anything except a front opening door. You can actually just lift the bars off the Ted easily but when I have done that previously (with the Barney) Pickle jumped out. So started again setting up the Mickey 2XL instead (should have done that in the first place!). I had had to remove the base of the Trixie wheel to screw it upside down in the Ted, which is quite a low cage. Annoying as when it was screwed upside down in the Mickey 2XL it fitted with the base still on.

Anyway it gives a bit more space under the wheel now. But had to saw the base off. They used to just pull off once you'd removed the screws but this was welded on!

He was very happy to be in his old familiar cage and ran happily in his wheel - very similar set up and in fact he had hardly been using the shelf and left side of his Plaza recently. But he probably didn't realise it was longer term at that point!

Anyway he's settling in nicely. I had put the Plaza outside (still with all the substrate in) and bagged up all the contents and put those outside too, intending to start cleaning it all out, but it got dark - and then we had six inches of snow! So I just left them till the snow went! That should kill any moths and larva! But I'll still disinfect it all.

So one advantage of the Plaza is - you can dismantle the bars in situ - made it a lot easier to take the bars off and take them outside. Even though it is less sturdy generally as a result of the bars being flat pack.

I'd imagine the Savic Plaza is probably similar in terms of construction to the Savic Zeno 3 Empire which I have for my 2 female rats. Initially when constructed it was decently sturdy as is, but a family member ended up deciding we should just add some zip ties for added stability - mainly the top, but also some on the bottoms of the side panels. I know it would make this kind of knock down design take longer to put together & take apart(you'd have to cut zip ties off each time) but it is something to consider if anyone ever wanted to keep the cage together better long term!

Thanks for that tip. I was just glad it was easy to disassemble so I could get the contents out without moths dropping out!

Could be that Pickle was thinking of Moo and not his Plaza when he sat on the sofa thinking. He was quite in sync with Moo and i'll never forget the synchronised head popping, lol.

You are probably more upset by the moths than Pickle who may well see them as an afternoon snack.
