Pickle is such a handsome fellow but I would say that as he reminds me of a younger Maestro. The cinnamon Syrian is a beautiful colouring and coat. But then Pickle had very beautiful parents too! His character is very individual though and captivating to read about.

You could cut a hole in the roof so he can still pop out.

I cut the roof into two sections so i can lift off the small part to check on his hoard, old food etc without disturbing him in his nest which is under the larger section.
That is a clever idea cutting the roof in half . Yes it would be easy to cut out the interior walls (well easy for OH with his saw anyway!) But I cut the front door in the middle so it would still be two separate ends probably. It would be better if the door was at one end. What I need is another house the same and cut the front door at one end. Not sure I want to fork out for one though. But could be possible to cut a new door and block the current one up - wouldn’t look too glamorous!

Pickle has built a big nest in one end of the his house and is using his potty in the other end, so I'll see if that continues and leave the house as it is for now. No second nest built on top of the potty this time, just a piece of cheese plonked on it. Clearly a very special thing so I moved it to one side before emptying the potty.

I think he must have tuned into us talking about changing his house and is now getting his habits in order!

Ah, has Pickle now realised that it is better to separate bedroom and bathroom? Good progress. Cheese is clearly much prized!

What a cute little face and name he's got. I really enjoyed your Christmas photos of him too, they were lovely.

A few photos of Pickle from last night. Trying to get in the pumpkin seed box and being spiderham up the sofa - made it to the top.

Thank you both. He is still a very shy hamster who likes his own company and rarely volunteers to come out but he did that night. He is lovely and tame and handleable when out but it has to be on his terms! He is not much different for being in the slightly smaller cage except that it is easier to interact when he does decide he wants to - and that is actually a really important thing - and he does seem a bit more secure as well. He arrived at the end of autumn/start of winter so it will be interesting to see if he comes out a lot more with warmer weather and lighter nights as most hamsters we’ve had seem to.

I often have little chats when he pops his head out of the top door of his house but he’s like a jack in a box trying to decide whether to actually come out or not - sometimes he does - other times he goes back in and waits till I’m not there haha.

He was very friendly and inquisitive last night. All on his terms
