Default Moo's thread

Moo arrived with us a week ago from Hamster Haven rescue in Cheshire. He was born there when his Mum came to the rescue pregnant. He was then adopted by a family who moved and couldn't keep him (don't know all the details) so he went back to the rescue, where he was very skitty for a while but tamed while he was there. He is now about a year old and I'm waiting to find out when his birthday is/was.

A few pictures have already been on the Meet Moo thread but have put them on here again so the thread is complete from when we got him .

After a couple of days he was out enjoying his cage. Washing himself inside the black salt pig and sat for ages in a sputnik. He then didn't come out much for a few days.

Tonight I called his name and he came to the door of his house and came out in the cage a bit, so let him walk into the snooze cube and he's had some sofa time. He is lovely and tame and easy to handle. So he is settling in. I'll try him out in the playpen next time.

Getting adventurous - he was thinking about a runner off the sofa arm but was happy to be picked up and brought back down to the cushions.

A few more from tonight - his first excursion in to his new living room! He had a long moment of sitting halfway up the sofa back on a cushion contemplating.

Such a shame this one didn't focus in time! His little head popping out of the snooze cube.

I'm still loving that name soo much. Well done on being patient (it's so hard sometimes isn't it) I think my fav pic is his little nose sticking up out of the hole in his house.

Hamsters certainly require a Lot of patience. You are very lucky that Moo is already tame. The lucky fella is guaranteed a fabulous hamster life with you.

Sofa time, pumpkin seeds as treats and being handled! Terrific progress there. Moo has really started to feel at home so you can see he was tame and just needed to settle down.

Thank you Coco. Yes he just needed settling in time. The way it was going I thought it could be a good 10 days but after 6 days he was happy once out and didn’t seem nervy. Yes I am very lucky that he is already hand tame. They are so fascinating to watch. I could almost see him processing - so this is a home, like the one I had before and lost - but this is nice again. But different. He sat for ages just seeming to contemplate - in between climbing the sofa.

I do think they have emotional processes. Although he was wonderfully cared for in the rescue it is different having a home.

Moo is really enjoying his cage. So much so that he doesn't seem that bothered about coming out! He nearly came out tonight but changed his mind. Might have to tempt him out! I was up late one night and saw him using everything. He sits in his coconut for a wash and dumps the odd bit of food in there and he loves the sputniks and tunnel - he often sits in the front one with the hemp mat. I haven't found out where he pees yet but it's not in the toilet!

He comes out and runs on his wheel most evenings and sits for a chat and almost comes nose to nose with you when he's near the cage door or in the sputnik. Then decides not to come out. I quite like the nose to nose thing though!

He is clearly aware there is another hamster above him as tonight he stood on his back legs and was sniffing at the roof and back bars.

I'm not surprised that Moo is not keen on coming out a lot. He has a wonderful home with everything he needs and wants. He must be one happy hamster!
