I haven't tried him with porridge yet - good idea. I got out of the habit of eating it so forgot about it.

That face! So cute Good to hear he's doing well with his softer foods, I'm sure he'll enjoy a bit of porridge too.

I'm glad Moo is feeling a bit better and enjoying the softer foods Serendipity, it's always worrying when they lose a bit of weight, this has been the case with Noah too and he's been enjoying more softer foods but, he's always been a bit fussy when it comes to hamster food.
I love the pics of Moo on your sofa, hams do seem to have a lot of fun roaming sofas but, you've got to have eyes in the back of your head.

Moo doesn't come out as often (out of the cage) these days but came to the cage door last night and was out on the sofa. He still has plenty of energy but his nails have got a bit long. So I decided to try and snip the very ends off - and had to give up!

He was absolutely not having it. With Charlie he would sit still and I could do the odd nail while he was sitting there. Moo never sits still. So I tried the - wrapping him in a blanket and having him upside down to try and do them. But he was so strong he wriggled free every time and I didn't want to slip with the nail scissors - so I've had to leave it for now. He was not impressed. I might try again in the afternoon when he is dopey - rather than late at night!

He is doing fine for his age - fur thinning a bit at the back end. He massacres a monkey nut if you give him one but doesn't eat much hard food otherwise - he's still getting soaked science selective and a bit of baby food as well.

He must be about 20 months old but could be older. He was supposed to be about a year old when we got him in October. He reminds me more of a two year old though - that's when I've found the nails usually start getting a bit long as they're less active.

Serendipity, I had the same problem with Star, the vets did them once for me in lockdown when they saw her and Twinkle. But within a few weeks they were long again. I tried with nail scissors- did not work. I got these from amazon:

https://smile.amazon.co.uk/gp/produc...?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I have managed to do a few nails each time and she is a squirmy devil in her old age.

I also have styptic powder in case of god forbid a little mishap.

Thank you Luna Yes those look safer than our little nail scissors in case of a slip. Yes I ended up having to take Charlie to the vets to get his done eventually. Newt never did get overgrown nails - he was much more active. I know to just take the very end tips off to avoid cutting the quick.

I will try Moo out of the cage late afternoon when he may be less wriggly! He has never been that keen on being held although will sit on your arm for about 10 seconds!

yes, i found them much safer than nail scissors, easier to line up too before you snip. may need a bit of manouvering to get just one nail in at a time. I reckon with two people it would be a lot easier, but I managed with a wriggly hamster and just myself.

I too have never had a problem with long nails, well nothing that a tiled floor or some rocks wouldn;t sort out. Star is only active a few mins each day and although she has to walk over rocks to get out of her house because of her arthritis her legs kind of turn in a bit which means the feet do and so the nails don't get worn down on one side.

Thank you Luna - I think it is just an old age thing! Moo has lots of rough surfaces to walk on.

Moo is getting quite old now. I reckon he is nearly two as he was “about” a year old when I adopted him last October. He has gone quite thin and boney again despite his supplements and softened good. Which is not unusual for older hamsters but I wonder if something else is going on. He is quite active though and still using his wheel. I think I’ll give him hemp seeds as well - they’re supposed to be high calorie. He still attacks a monkey nut and gets those quite regularly.
